Rafael Prieto: Discarded Fragments of a 1908 Façade Reborn as Furniture

When fragments of the Beaux-Arts façade of 366 Broadway in Tribeca were discarded, designer Rafael Prieto kept them — terra cotta and carved stone from Frederick C. Browne’s 1908 building — and spent about 18 months scanning, photographing and layering them to pull out a design vocabulary rather than copy ornament. The resulting pieces, in painted birch, red lacquer and natural wood, sometimes carry the actual fragments and sometimes just their profiles and proportions. ‘The Future of the Past’ is on view at Emma Scully Gallery through December 12.
