Skroget: Nineteen Reclaimed-Timber Ribs Frame a Hull-Shaped Harbour Sauna in Arctic Norway

On the harbour at Båtsfjord, Norway, nineteen angled timber frames lean toward the water like the skeleton of a boat under construction — Skroget takes its name from the Norwegian word for hull. Designed and built by Rare Collectiv, 15 students from NTNU’s Design in Context course, the 40-metre structure pairs a community sauna with a public deck, and almost all of it is built from lumber salvaged from a building the local municipality dismantled. The ribs do more than nod to the maritime setting: they form a sloping roof over a sheltered, south-facing walkway and seating area, giving people a place to pause by the harbour out of the wind.
