Peter Zumthor’s first building in his home town of Basel is a £110m gallery for the Beyeler Foundation that rises like a rocky outcrop beside Renzo Piano’s 1997 museum. Jura limestone is mixed into the concrete and tamped by hand at no more than 45cm a day, leaving each day’s wobbly joint visible like sedimentary strata, while pear wood handrails, leather-wrapped door handles and hand-blown glass lamps make almost every part bespoke. Oliver Wainwright weighs Zumthor’s case for craft against the carbon cost of all that concrete and an interior that can read as a luxury boutique. Source: The Guardian
