From Harlem portraits in the 1940s to assignments for Life magazine to the 1963 March on Washington, Gordon Parks (1912–2006) treated the camera as an instrument of social justice — photographing Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. alongside artists, celebrities and the families whose ordinary lives he refused to let go unrecorded. ‘Voices in the Mirror’ gathers that work into a major survey, timed to the 20th anniversary of The Gordon Parks Foundation. What holds it together is Parks’ insistence that composition and conscience were never separate concerns.
