Peony Gent: Drawing South London Until a Tree Becomes Shorthand

Peony Gent takes her sketchbook to Burgess Park and Walworth Road and abstracts what she finds — flatblocks, street scenes, nature — pushing each form to the edge of recognition. She describes the pursuit as building her own visual shorthand for how she experiences a place. Her recent grid-like works extend the comics she has made for years, composing a location from panels rather than a single image.
