Kanako Abe builds tender paper-cut reliefs in which giant wolves, small rabbits and curious deer move through a dreamlike realm, glimpsed through openings framed by layered foliage. The scenes borrow the logic of childhood stories and folk tales, with every cut treated as a step further into the world. Abe has recently carried the technique into The Paper Girl, a forthcoming book made with young adult novelist Caryl Lewis.
