Emi Takahashi: Glyphs Grown from Agar, Duckweed and Mould

Montreal-based designer Emi Takahashi builds images, animation and type from living materials, trying to translate what she calls the hidden patterns and languages of the more-than-human world into graphic form. She has made custom glyphs for Ganni by cyanotype printing on agar, spent a day animating duckweed for A24 with animator Nik Arthur, and produced a logo and typeface out of mould for studio Human Person. Her training runs through washi papermaking in Kochi and, most recently, stone carving in Lurs.
