Joe Macken: A 21-Year, Hand-Built Scale Model of New York City

Joe Macken — a Queens truck driver — spent 21 years hand-building a 50-by-27-foot, 1:2,400 scale model of New York City out of balsa, cardboard and glue, capturing nearly a million structures across 340 modular sections. The piece is now installed at the Museum of the City of New York as He Built This City, where it reads less like a hobbyist diorama and more like a slow, devotional act of urban observation.
