The Belgian-Tanzanian nonprofit APOPO trains African giant pouched rats to slip through collapsed buildings where neither people nor robots can go, wearing custom backpacks that stream live audio and video and carry two-way comms so rescuers can talk to survivors. Since the first 2019 prototype the pack has been redesigned around the animal: the protruding camera that snagged on debris is gone, and the battery moved off the top to lower the centre of gravity. When a rat finds a person, it tugs a pendant on its vest to alert its handler. Source: Fast Company
