Tom Hegen’s ‘The Mineral Age’: 247 Aerial Photographs of What the Green Transition Is Digging Up

Getting off fossil fuels means mining billions of tons of cobalt, copper, lithium and nickel, much of it in places already hit hardest by the climate crisis. German photographer Tom Hegen spent six years flying over those sites — candy-coloured lithium evaporation ponds in the Atacama, an ochre nickel pit pressed against Sulawesi rainforest — and his new book gathers 247 of the images. They are seductive abstractions with an uncomfortable question underneath: decarbonisation, yes, but at whose cost? Source: Colossal
