Ryue Nishizawa’s Observatory: A 33-Metre Orange Cone That Opens a Japanese Landfill to the Public

For the first Setouchi Art and Industry festival, SANAA co-founder Ryue Nishizawa placed a bright orange cone, 33 metres across and four metres tall, at the edge of a landfill basin inside the Oono Associates recycling complex in Toon, Shikoku. Sized like an artificial hill and coloured to clash with the blue-green landfill lining, it invites visitors into a normally closed industrial site to watch how materials circulate and how waste reshapes the land. It anchors the Kazuyo Sejima-curated exhibition Landscapes of Waste. Source: Dezeen
