For more than four decades, environmental artist Patrick Dougherty has coaxed willow saplings into monumental, site-specific sculptures he calls Stickworks — well over 300 of them worldwide. Working with literal truckloads of saplings grown for fencing and basketmaking, he weaves whimsical, architectural forms that fold local materials and communities into the making. The results conjure an almost primal connection with the natural world.
