The Grolier Club opens Henry Wessel — Photographs and Books, more than 65 prints from the New Jersey-born photographer who rose to prominence in the early 1970s with black-and-white compositions of the American West. Wessel picked up a borrowed Leica while studying at Penn State and never put it down, building a body of work — including the Incidents series shown at Tate Modern in 2014 — that finds its subject in ordinary California light and unremarkable streets. “There is the world, and there is the photograph,” he said. “The photograph is not the world, it’s a completely different thing.”
