Galway City’s New ‘G’: Seanchló, a Fáinne and a Ship’s Hull in One Letterform

Galway City Council has replaced its 1984 mark with a single lowercase maroon g, drawn so that the detached tail traces the hull of the ship from the city’s coat of arms. The bowl borrows from seanchló, the historic Irish script, and the circular fáinne worn to signal that the wearer speaks Irish — bowl as citizenry, hull as the council carrying it. It is an unusual amount of argument to load into one letterform, and the councillors who objected proved the point by arguing back.
