Jazz-punk band Robocobra Quartet’s new album Hundred Pieces runs to exactly 100 tracks, and each one gets its own artwork: a petri dish of agar and malt extract inoculated with fungi sampled from rotting wood, brick walls, cheese and cured meat, then photographed under fixed LED light at different points in its lifecycle. The band talk about riffs and jams as “spores” that cross-pollinate into songs, so the mould is less a gimmick than a diagram of how the record was made — and member Thibault Barillon has even coded their website so digital mould grows across it at random.
