Michail Pirgelis: ‘HYLE’ — Decommissioned Airliner Fuselages Ground Down Into Abstract Sculpture

For his first institutional solo show in Austria, Michail Pirgelis fills Kunstraum Dornbirn’s historic assembly hall with sculptures made from decommissioned passenger aircraft — exterior walls, window rows and floor panels, mostly salvaged from aircraft graveyards in the Mojave Desert. He scrapes, grinds, polishes and fragments the material until its original function is barely legible, letting forms such as a towering fuselage ring feel uncovered rather than constructed; the title borrows Aristotle’s term for raw matter and its potential to take shape. On view until 8 November 2026. Source: Contemporary Art Daily
