Digital art institution Le Random has mapped the history of generative art as an interactive timeline of 1,147 moments, from 71,000 BCE to 2026, edited by Peter Bauman with contributions from Sasha Stiles and Vuk Ćosić. It opens with crosshatched marks scratched into ochre at Blombos Cave — generative, under Philip Galanter’s definition, because a symmetry rule rather than the maker decided where each line fell — and runs through the Jacquard loom, Harold Cohen’s AARON and Karl Sims’s evolving creatures to today’s diffusion models, framing each as another step in artists handing control to systems.
