Hans Op de Beeck’s new solo show at Almine Rech gathers the matte grey, monochromatic sculptures he has built a career on — a lily-specked pond, a carousel perched on a spindly stand, a figure at rest on a chaise lounge beside a fawn. Coating everything in a single flat tone drains the scenes of incident and leaves only atmosphere, so that the works read less as objects than as arrested moments. Many are life-size, which turns looking into something closer to trespassing on someone else’s stillness.
