Brompton was founded in 1975 by engineer Andrew Ritchie, who prototyped the folding mechanism in his West London flat to solve the problem of carrying a bike onto the Tube. Five decades on, the bikes are still made in London but the company sells across Europe, the US and Asia, with a range well beyond the original folder. Studio Blackburn’s new identity works to hold those two facts together — British engineering provenance and international reach — rather than trading one for the other.
