Known for large origami-style works, Sipho Mabona turns to something far more personal: the calabash, the hollowed gourd used across tropical Africa as a vessel for food and drink. In this new series he rebuilds the form from recycled milk cartons, translating his late father’s stories of a rural Eastern Cape childhood into vibrant, patterned surfaces. The material substitution does the emotional work — an everyday container standing in for an inherited one.
