Maryam Yousif: ‘Habibti’ — Funk Art Meets Mesopotamian Memory in Clay

Iraqi-American artist Maryam Yousif merges the 20th-century Bay Area funk art movement with the visual language of the country of her birth. Born in Baghdad and now based in San Francisco, she has spent several years developing her Habibti figures — the Arabic endearment for sweetheart — each ceramic body dressed in flowers, landscapes and abstracted shapes. Ancient cultural heritage arrives in contemporary, deliberately playful form.
