Between 1999 and 2021, Julie L. Green (1961–2021) collected mass-produced platters and plates and re-fired them with cobalt blue mineral paint, illustrating the last meals requested by people on death row — pizzas, lobster, pies, KFC cartons, a birthday cake for a man who never had one, and a plate reading simply “NONE.” The series now runs to hundreds of pieces, on view at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.
