Alejandro Aguilar Canela: Drawing a Way Out of the Bleakest Emotions

The Austin-based artist works mostly in graphite and fine-line mechanical pencil, building compositions two to four feet wide on paper and vellum. His subjects are depression, anger, abandonment, fear and sexuality — approached not as endpoints but as shadowy paths that lead somewhere brighter. Canela welcomes stray marks and accidents into the work rather than erasing them.
