Melissa Joseph: ‘Casserole Culture’ — Family Photographs Rendered in Needle-Felted Wool

Melissa Joseph translates family snapshots into tender needle-felted scenes, pressing wool into industrial felt until the images soften at the edges like half-remembered rooms. Raised in Saint Marys, a small Pennsylvania city, by an Irish-American mother and a father from Kerala, Joseph threads biracial life, Midwestern neighbourliness and the gendered history of fibre craft through every piece. ‘Casserole Culture’ at Charles Moffett gathers the work into a study of what a community feeds itself, and what it inherits.
