En Iwamura: Tiny Faces Surface Amid Sweeping Lines in Expressive Ceramic Sculptures

In the voluptuous ceramics of En Iwamura, sweeping lines of clay frame minuscule eyes and noses that barely emerge from the earthen material. Based in the pottery town of Shigaraki in Japan’s Shiga Prefecture, Iwamura builds expressive, abstract busts and masks in vibrant gradients and two-toned glazes. His work draws on the concept of Ma (間) — the gap or pause that measures the space between ourselves and others.
