In his new body of work, the Antwerp-born painter Ben Sledsens sets flat fields of saturated colour against methodical patterns built from grasses, leaves and brick. The paintings catch life at a pause: a swan hovering over its own tinted reflection, a woman stepping out of her front door, still lifes with a breeze coming through the window. Sledsens often starts on paper before carrying the most telling details onto canvas, layering repetition until it thickens into willow.
